Controversy Thursday: Casting Stones

Has anyone seen Lance Bass' boyfriend? Holy hell, he's beautiful (oh wait, I forgot, I don't believe in hell).

Reichen Lehmkuhl

I was proud of Lance for coming out of the closet. Shoot, if I were dating one of the hottest men on earth, I would too. Doesn't change his wholesome, good-little-christian-boy image at all...or does it?

In a people magazine article, one female reader blasted Lance for claiming to be a Christian given the "abominable" lifestyle he has chosen; one which is (according to her) strictly understood to be forbidden under Christian law. This mindset is something I've always struggled with. Do the old school chronicles written way back in say, 5 A.D. 'really' describe homosexuality as repugnant and sinful, or is that just man's contemporary interpretation? Isn't the base of Christianity really about ethics and faithfulness? And who does that woman think she is judging Lance Bass' devotion to Christianity? It's not her place to determine who is truly a Christian and who isn't; it's God's. She who casts the first stone...

I totally agree. Somehow it always strikes me as ironic when people use religion--which is supposed to be about love and acceptance--as a cover for bigotry. And I'm not sure that it matters even if the bible really does condemn homosexuality as a sin. I mean, by that logic working on sundays is also a sin punishable by death.

I don't know what my religious beliefs are, but I do know that a Creator of the Universe would never be so dense as to worry about where Bill and Bob like to put their naughty bits....and I seriously doubt that he would go so far as to condemn them for all eternity.

The prohibitions against homosexuality that mainly get cited are among the gajillions of prohibitions that get ignored from the old testament, like the dietary ones for instance, and masturbation. The wording is something like "man shouldn't lie with man as with a woman, for that is an abomination." But like I said, the people who recite you chapter and verse about that garbage are probably ignoring the bits about not being able to eat a pulled pork sandwich or shellfish or what have you.

well played ornac, you beat me to it.

what the churchies fail to realize is that the bible was written by men. not god. there are hundreds of other gospels out there, other chapters, the vatican decided which ones made it in to print, and which didn't. the new testament was basically the old timey version of capitalizing on movie rights. all written at different times, and not all books got in. basing your life off of this is as rediculous as basing your life off scientology. at least that was written by one man. who did not have a dissenting opinion amongst himself. this is why, i do not practice religion. it's a farce. and really annoying too.

Dam.......You heathens...May your souls melt in the fire of hell with me roasting hot marshmallows...

Religion is nothing but a tool for controlling people.......One giant sham that people subscribe to out of the fear of unknown and death. What would man 10,000 years ago know about homosexuality?????? Why would god care????? Just nonsense.....I think I just punched my ticket for hell, first class.

First of all, Lance's man is a starfucker who, from my understanding from what I've read in the gossip mags/blogs is a real tool. He was the guy who with his boyfriend won the Amazing Race I think the first season and then shortly after dumped the boyfriend to pursue and acting career, which to my knowledge has gone nowhere. He is supposedly the one who pushed Lance out of the closet (not that that closet wasn't already transparent) because he's written a book. What, on earth, he has written a book about is beyond me.

That all said, I'd still hit it.

As for the biblical references to homosexuality, it's already been said but its mostly old testament where you had to poke your wife through a hole in a sheet or something too. I won't disgrace anyone's religious beliefs simply because I think they're a load, but I was also raised being taught that Christ's death sort of got rid of all the old Jewish law that had previously existed and that belief in Christ as your Savior was the key to not burning in hell. I'm not sure why modern day Christians even bother with the Old Testament. We all pick and choose which parts to listen to and which to ignore.

Good post and comments, Cookie. I'm not a believer, myself, but everything we have learned about Jesus (whether he was a man or the Messiah) was that he taught love and tolerance. Not hate, discrimination, and judgment. If Jesus exists, I think he'd be proud of Lance too.

He might be a hottie, but that shirt has to go.

I'm not sure how "Christianity" works, but I was raised Roman Catholic. There is a hierarchy that decides the "rules" of the church. A few things happened in my life when I was 19 that didn't fit what the church said, so I left. I don't consider myself Catholic or Christian or anything else. I don't like organized religion at all.

I've never heard of "Christian Law," but if such a thing exists and says Christians are not homosexual, then Lance is not a Christian.

I can't stand when people call themselves Catholic, but they use contraception, they have sex before marriage, &c. They might believe in some of the tenets of Catholocism, but to *be* Catholic, you must believe XYZ. If you don't believe it, then you're not Catholic! What's the big deal? Why do people feel this need to associate themselves with a religion they clearly don't follow?

There's a church out there that is Christian in nature, but fully endorses homosexual relationships. Unitarian, I think?

Maybe homosexuals will burn in hell for all of eternity. Maybe God is friggin' pissed off that they don't follow His word. Maybe He couldn't care less as long as they're good people. But that's the point, there's no proof of any of it!

I've always found it interesting that of all the many (visible) sins of church goers, homosexuality/homosexuals are among the most popular targets. I come from a strict/devout Protestant background, and I still consider myself a "believer" in the teachings of Christ...things I try to embrace daily in my life: forgiveness, sacrifice, humility, tolerance, helping the less fortunate, etc. I gave up on organized religion long ago, however....probably around the time (8th grade) when my church ordered my parents that I undergo Christian pychotherapy before returning to church. As a sidenote, I was recently posting messages from a nuclear war cult on my blog. The messages quickly shifted from words of praise to me for "spreading God's word" to hateful nastiness (which I also posted) once they realized I am a gay man. Suddenly, I am a "lying whore" who will soon have "devastating curses" visted upon me.

I've always been interrested in theology and am myself a Recovering Former Catholic.
I recently read that the passage of the Bible that Christians often quote to back up their belief that homosexuality is a sin is largely taken out of context. Paul was writing to the Romans and condeming the hedonistic practice of many Roman men who would keep an adolescent boy as a sex-slave. In context, Paul was speaking out against pedophelia, not homosexuality.
But this is merely one theory, and to be honest, I agree with most of the above posts - "Good Christian" and "Homosexual" are not mutually exclusive terms. It is never our place to judge what consenting adults do in the bedroom.
