Mr. Cab Driver

No matter how many times a taxi driver tries to charge me $35 to get home from Adams Morgan, I still swear that the drivers have one of the toughest jobs in DC. It's a city chock full of 'entitled,' rich bitches, and cabbies get paid a pittance to cart their spoiled asses from bar to bar. At night, intoxicated frat boys pile in - voices at earplug-necessary decibels, pizza grease dripping onto the seats. And just half an hour ago, I watched a 'professional' man in a suit kick the side door of a cab because the driver 'came too close' to him as he marched into the street...in front of the driver who had the right of way. Jackass!

You couldn't pay me enough to take that kind of indifferent abuse 12 hours a day. That's why I over-tip and always say "Thank you so much; I really appreciate the ride." Because somebody should...

i know geese mate for life but i was at the pond once and this smaller geese tried to swim away from the big goose and the big goose blocked her.

if thats the case then the whole GMFL is just a case of abusive-male-geese-keeping -their-mates-in-locked-up yo!

just something to think about :P

Okay while I admire your ability to be nice to the DC cab drivers, after living here for seven years almost, I think DC cab drivers are the WORST I have seen in any other major city. I take cabs everywhere and 80% of the time, the driver goes extremely slow and cuts people off to make turns, is constantly yapping on their phone, etc. In DC, they are not allowed to be on the phone, even if it is a handsfree. Most of the time, its not even a handsfree. Fine, I can deal with that, talk on the phone. But I have somewhere to go and I don't need to sit at every freaking light because you are busy chatting and not driving. I tip well when the driver is pleasant and gets me where I'm going with some sense of urgency. That is very rare.

I do agree dealing with drunks from Adams Morgan would not make my day, but I've also seen drivers overcharge b/c they believe their patrons to be drunk and not paying attention. They probably make a lot more money than you think they do.

In any case, give me a NYC cab driver over a DC one any day of the week.

While I am personnally nice to cab drivers when I am in thir car, I feel no remorse for failing to signal, cutting them off, and other manifestations of rude driving, whenever I'm going past a DC cab.

They may be the most thoughtless, or sometimes amost ctively reckless drivers ever.

Carrie-Agreed. Some of us are nice cab go-ers who ALWAYS tip...I HATE DC CAB drivers...I could write an entire blog about just that. They consistently overcharge and treat their female passengers like garbage...going out of the way to get more zones in...being sleazy-my friend had one cabbie try to TOUCH her leg...CMON...I agree they take abuse and some of them are really nice people but most of them dish it RIGHT BACK OUT...argh.

This is an extremely useful site. I've used it to call out some 'zone' violators a few times.

I've met some of the best cabbies ever in D.C., and some of the worst as well. There's really no in-betweens about it. They're either polite, friendly, and good at getting you somewhere fast, or they're incapable of speaking the language, don't use a map, and demand a $5 tip for an $8 ride.

That is very nice of you and very true. A safe ride home is worth a lot in this town. :)
    Happy Weekend!

Most of the time I'm with you girl, but on this one, no. I cannot stand the behavior of DC cab drives. With the exception of one that my office uses religiously, other than that, I'd rather walk home than take a cab. But I do it of course because I'm lazy.

The former Starbucks employee in me loves you for that. I have the same mentality, because I know how much "customer service" sucks.

But $35 from Adams Morgan? Holy Moses!

If someone kicked my car, he better run into a building before I hit him with it!

I vehemently disagree with this DC-cabbie-hating...

Most of the drivers I've had have been really intelligent guys who came here for school and just stayed on as cabbies. If I'm in the mood, I usually try and talk to the driver -- he's usually into it.

I've met amateur philosophers from all over Africa and the Middle East, and had a few exchanges that made my freaking day.

I have had lots of good experiences with DC cabs as well, and ride often enough to try and create a blog about it. Most of the blogs I find on DC cabs tend to be to the negative. So interesting to see another with good experiences (as well as the bad).
