Gala

I have my office holiday party (aka prom) next weekend (as 'outside-the-box' thinkers, we host our black tie event after the holidays so no one will have to miss it), so I spent a good chunk of the afternoon yesterday in the mall searching for a dress. I had to buy one. I came home with four.

I like shopping in general, but I LOVE shopping for evening gowns. I get to spend hours in front of a mirror in heavy, flowing, beaded silk dresses, playing princess in much the same way that I did when I was eight and pranced around the basement wearing my Mom's silver lamé hand-me-downs from the early 70s.

It's the only time I lament not having pursued a career in Hollywood (or pagentry), for the simple fact that I would be able to dress up in expensive formal wear more than once a year.

Not one, not two, but FOUR?!? Holy crap!

I know what you mean. That's one of the few reasons why I miss the sorority days...it was fun to get dressed up for formals.

My mom used to shop for dresses in Richmond, then drive 5-10 of them to Charlottesville for me to try on and pick from. I always got to keep at least two. I could usually think of more than one formal I "needed" a new dress for. :)

I echo your sentiment about the "playing princess" part-- even though most of the events I attend these days require a little black dress, I can dress shop for HOURS, and it reminds me of when I was little and got to play dress-up. We didn't have a Greek system at my undergrad school, so no sorority formals for me, but law school formals gave me a great excuse to buy fun things and indulge.

However, I have found that there is one situation that formal-dress shopping is no fun. Have you ever spent an entire day trying on prospective bridesmaid dresses for a indecisive bride-to-be? As honored as I was to be in the wedding for my friend... grrr!

I used to dress up in my mom's dresses as well. Playing princess in the basement is so nice, isn't it Precious? I'd do me!
It rubs the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again!

    ;)

4, wow! I have never had the occasion to wear evening formal wear. I've always wanted to...but I've never had reason to. :-(

(yes, you are correct in guessing I din't go to prom)

Ugh. I have an annual gala at work that I have to spend a great deal of time planning, and I just joined a Board with another annual gala. The dress-up thing now = work for me, so it's not as much fun.

But I did love playing with my Mom's clothes - I never really played princess, cuz I always wanted to be a fabulous celebrity. My mom had these pair of shiny silver strappy heels that I ADORED.

Is there potential that at least two of these dresses will never actually be worn?

Yeah - two are already going back. I'll probably keep the other two.

I bought two dresses for NYE, and contemplated keeping both. Alas, I returned one, only to buy another one for "future" uses. I've got nowhere to wear it, so it's sitting pretty in my closet.

I've always loved ABS and Jessica McClintock:)
