80s Sayings Revival

Here are expressions from my youth that I would love to see make a comeback:
  • You don't have to go mental
  • NOT!
  • Grody
  • Gag me with a spoon
  • No duh
  • Wicked
  • Gotta motor

Keep an eye out for these words in my future posts...

ok let's try this again without half of my word ver ending up in my comment...

I could go for some "no duh"... but how about some "totally rad"?

I want to bring back "chode" for name-calling purposes. I didn't know what it was until eighth grade, but it was a great all-purpose insult!

[throwing all my support behind re-introducing "chode"]

I was always partial to the "no duh - hickey!" myself...

What about modern spins on old favorites? For example, I'm partial to saying "barftastic" where I would have said "oh, barf" twenty years ago.

I've been working on bringing back grody since...well, as far as I'm concerned, grody never left! :-)

I'm fairly certain that in Boston, "wicked" has never left the vernacular.

  • At December 08, 2005 1:40 PM, Blogger DC Cookie said…

But the Bostonian 'wicked' is always followed by another adjective (e.g. Cookie is wicked smaaht). The 'wicked' to which I'm referring would be a stand-alone adjective.

The best 80s expression ever? "What's your damage?" (nee: "What's your damage, Heather?") One woman's opinion.

  • At December 08, 2005 3:11 PM, Blogger Kathryn Is So Over said…

I still say "What's your damage?" and I also like to say "color me impressed," etc. from that film. But I have to say, as someone who dressed as The Heathers for Halloween in high school (I was the yellow/cheerleader Heather McNamara, thanks very much) I can NOT condone anyone ever saying "f--k me gently with a chainsaw."

I use 'wicked' quite a bit. It's a wonderful word.

I am a huge fan of "whatever".

Hmmm, I already still use 3 of them! Does that make me retro or fashion forward? ;-)

A broken clock is right twice a day.

The sun will rise and set.

Our parent's wardrobes will come back in style. One day. If it sits there long enough, it'll come back. I remember the nasty ass clothes that I was wrapped in during the '70's and now I can find the same ugly brown sweaters at the mall.

    Totally...

    Corduroys. Need I say more?

    Fer sure...

Is "don't have a cow" from the 80's or 90's? Either way I have been trying to bring it back and use it in the workplace - and hope to have started it back up.

There is a woman in my office that says COOL BEANS all the freakin' time. The funniest part is that she is in her 50s

"Don't have a cow" is actually from the seventies, but of course it was jettisoned into the 90's via Bart Simpson.

Do any girls use the euphemism "I have to powder my nose" any more? I like that.

Tubular was mid 70's surfer speak, but not widespread until the 80's...Gnarly, Bitchin', Killer, Rad...all from the 60-70's surf culture.

Grotty was Beatlemania 60's actually, a take off from grotesque. Grotty to the Max came much later.

Don't forget "Let's not and say we did."

I still say "Westerberg feeds the world," which sorts out both the Heathers fans and the Replacements fans.
