Babies

I spent the weekend in the homeland, celebrating the birthdays of myself and two of my closest Canadian girl friends. We started our Saturday night with a girls' dinner, at which over half the women were sharing stories of their husbands and children. These are women with whom I used to play high school basketball, shout at boys from windows of the game buses, and gossip with over illicit Canadian beer at a house party. Then on Sunday I went to lunch with my oldest and dearest friend who is now 4 months pregnant (and positively glowing). Interesting how things change.

With the inundation of baby chatter, I remembered an incident from this summer. My college roommate had just had her second baby boy. I went over to visit a few days after she arrived home from the hospital. After an hour of ogling and cooing and talking, she asked if I wanted to hold him. No question...absolutely! I love kids. But this was entirely different than helping babysit a friend's 4-year old. Holding a 6-day old sleeping baby in the curve of your elbow does something to a woman. The power of having something that helpless snuggled against your skin kicks maternal instincts into full charge. I fell in love. When I left her house, tears streamed down my face. It wasn't sadness. It was desire. A feeling that all women should be given the opportunity to experience in their lives. Motherhood.

I can't wait to hold my best friend's baby in April...

That would be 'Charming Fellow,' and no, no hints. I'm still a Party Girl. Not quite ready for my own...yet.

I hear ya, Cookie. For now we'll just enjoy the website dedicated to photos of my HS friend's baby - from AFAR.

Happy hour on Wednesday? Nobody has to work on Turkey Day. I know you're all ready to party.

Tempting. But, since I DON'T have kids and won't for a while (hee hee), I'm free to travel frequently, which is what I'll be doing starting Wednesday...

My friends are throwing a big party at Chloe/Saki - might be worth investigating.

Well am I invited to that party or do I have to get a formal invitation? I would love to go, but nobody told me about it. Should I bring a hot dish or a dessert? Just let me know. Have fun traveling. Where are you planning on going???

OOohhh yes...the newborn infant is deadly to a woman.

If you are a man, and you are not ready to have kids with your lady, do not let her within 50' of a small sleeping baby.

I hate holding small babies. I'm always afraid that I'll do something to break them, and the parents will blame me (which, of course, if I break their newborn, they totally should).

The other week I babysat for a five week old baby (who happens to be one of the cutest babies in the blogsphere), and seriously it does something to you. I was glad to give him back but he was just so cute sitting there in his bouncer that I ended up holding him for most of the night. For now though, I'm all for just babysitting. None of this waking up at 3 AM nonsense.

jordan, you would be suprised as to how resilient babies actually are. I was terrified by how the nurses handled my young ones when they were born, but quickly came to realize they don't break so easily.

About a year and a half ago, a coworker had a baby girl. I've admired babies from afar before, but somehow this little one did something to me. Whenever she'd bring her into the office that baby was MINE for about an hour - I loved that baby and she responded really well to me. Luckily she's older now and I don't see her as often, so the primal urge has subsided a bit. But WOW was it powerful!

The beauty is, when you're pregnant you can fart with impunity.

We should all go out to California and volunteer to hold Britney Spears' baby since it's obvious she isn't home holding it...and Daddy's off getting his "rows" done.

We all know I LOVE babies...but no no, not for at least 6 more years!

    That's why I babysit...money and I get to hand them back. :)

It really feels a woman's heart with pride, as a mother, to hear that her children are "Birth Control" for single, party girls. Oh, how proud we are to offer such a helpful public service! ; )
