Charitable Finger Pointing

Inspired by the following anonymous comment, written as a response to my post about the bachelorette party on 8/29/05:

“you should come down from the high horses of pleasure seeking and channel some energy to help the less fortunte.you will have more satisfaction.”

Ignoring the obvious typos, this anonymous person is making two bold assumptions; a) that I spend all of my time 'pleasure-seeking,' and b) that I am not charitable. Instinct, of course, was to retort and defend myself. But in this case, I believe a full post is necessary.

First, in the wake of one of the nation’s most horrific natural disasters, I realize that I spent the week writing about bachelorette parties, men who mooch, and my new car. This was a conscious choice. I understand what has happened. My heart aches. I am doing everything that I believe I’m capable of doing to assist. But life as we know it shouldn’t come to a halt either. My blog is not a response to the world’s social woes; it is simply a humourous break from the monotony of the day. For readers who are upset that I choose to discuss leisure over catastrophy, romance over politics, or the joys of my day over world news, feel free to insert negative comments, but recognize that you have missed the point of my blog.

Second, I have always been of the opinion that the most charitable people are those who do so anonymously. People who don’t require recognition for their donations, who volunteer in the community but don’t spend hours talking about it, who make sacrifices without requiring remuneration; these are the requirements for true selflessness. The anonymous commenter is correct. Focusing energy on helping people who are less fortunate is far more satisfactory than any other form of recreation. But for obvious reasons, I choose not to discuss my charitable efforts on a public forum. What purpose would that serve?

There you have it. Back to 'pleasure-seeking' tomorrow...

You don't need to justify yourself, but you did a damned good job, regardless.

"the most charitable are those who do so anonymously"

are we to assume that you are an anonymous donor by saying that?

and if so, does that make you less than the "most charitable" by telling everyone that you are such a righteous giver?

    please.

Yeah I feel that people that take blogging seriously have some serious issues.... also, very eloquent "giving" argument

Anon - I didn't say anything one way or the other about what I have or haven't done for charity. This isn't a self-serving post. You aren't to assume anything either way - that is my point. I admire people who are charitable without broadcasting it. Period.

    Well said, Cookie.

As the Good Book says "Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you." - Matt. 6

I'm glad you cited that passage, Phil, because I've been thinking of it a lot this past week.

    Well put, Miss Cookie.

    Cookie,
Personally, I found your blog refreshing and fun in a time of disaster and chaos. That is why I love reading your blog. It is fun, witty, insightful, thought-provoking and a great place to come when I am being lazy at work.
Don't let the haters get you down.
Life goes one...we have to move forward. We help when we can and we keep living and doing our best.
Besides, what's wrong with being a "pleasure-seeker"? It's better than the opposite.
"Live well and enjoy life"...that's my motto...well that and "jimmy crack corn"! hee hee

btw, you'll never be famous if you dont tick a few people off.

I mean, George Washington, blah blah... but Im sure the British weren't so thrilled back in the day.

I don't know what the Canadian version is.

I agree with Johnny, Blame Canada.

(but only until DCcookie redeems the northern neighbor and we get our post on Canadian Girls).

cookie - you bring up a very good point about not broadcasting charitable efforts. i only slightly disagree because i feel like the disaster relief efforts have made people feel so helpless that they might not know where to start.yes they may be eventually inundated with weblinks and phone numbers, but if i can share up to date and accurate information concerning relief efforts (especially locally because let's be honest, some government and national efforts just aren't proving to be effective) then perhaps someone reading my blog will get an idea of how they can do their part.

Apparently only a few of us can 'gallop' through the field of pleasure seeking while also doing our best to help those in need.

Like the convertible, Come pick me up and lets go pursue happiness.

Absolutely VP! I think helping direct people to the right places (and best places) to donate is a wonderful idea! I just meant broadcasting how much you are involved yourself. "Hey - look at me...I donated $1,000, what did YOU do?" But suggesting good benefits and organizations for donation is a fantastic idea.

Cookie--I too have consciously avoided blogging about Katrina, even though I have family and friends who, thankfully, survived the tragedy in NOLA. I figured there is nothing I can say that hasn't been addressed on our friends' blogs, and my blog is (generally) just pop-culture bullsh**.

As for "...the hypocrites do in the synagogues..."

WHAT? Excuse me? Somebody PLEASE explain this to me. Maybe I am completely misinterpreting it, but is that passage a slam on Jews? If so, I'll have you know that Judaism holds highest those who are anonymously charitable.

MPL - Jesus was speaking in that verse (Jesus was Jewish, too, you know!).

He was talking with the Pharisees, who liked to put on big shows to prove to people how pious they were. He spoke about how you shouldn't pray aloud on the street corners, or make a big show over how much money they tithed at the synagogue. Right before that line you quoted He says "sound no trumpet" like the hypocrites do - He means that those people put on a show for others, and that's the reason they do what they do, not because they actually care.

He doesn't mean people who go to synagogue are hypocrites. He means the people who make a big show before others to make themselves appear more righteous than others are. Their hearts are not in the right place. Jesus went to the temple and the synagogue all the time.

It's ignorant to assume that just because people aren't blogging about Katrina that they aren't doing something to help. Period.

Who is to say that Cookie has not donated money or sent a care package? How the hell do you know? You DON'T. Dumbass.
