Best Pick-Up Joint

The Washington Post's 'Best of DC' lists are now up and running and ready for our votes. The VP of the ARL sent this list to us this morning to laugh about...Best DC pick-up joints. Are you serious?

  1. Adams Mill Bar and Grill
  2. Clarendon Ballroom
  3. Dream
  4. Local 16
  5. McFadden's
  6. Mister Days
  7. The Front Page
  8. Tom Tom
  9. Tony and Joe's
  10. Whitlow's on Wilson

Guess it depends on what your definition of 'pick-up joint' is. If your definition is 'place to find really hammered, early-20s frat boy who spills beer on your toes, knocks into people while attempting to prep-step with you to Sweet Caroline in the middle of a humid, over-packed, make-shift dance floor, then tries to stick his tongue down your throat while ordering another beer to replace the one he has spilled everywhere,' then yes, the Post has it dead-on. How did Angry Inch and Mad Hatter not make the list??

I'll stick to my lounges...thanks.

I think all these places should be known by their nicknames/reps:

    Kickball Bar
    Broom
    Cream
    Rooftop Pickup
    McFatty's
    Mister Dudes
    Wednesday Night ONLY
    Scary Group Freakers
The Line at Sequoia Was Too Long
    Shitlow's

    None of the above...

Like they couldn't throw in a for-the-hell-of-it plug for Rhino Bar (and Pumphouse)? I mean, any place called a Pumphouse should be recognized as a pick-up joint.

Really though, I'm reasonably sure that I don't want anything to do with the woman that goes to these places expressly because they're considered pick-up joints. If your aim is to pick someone up you can do it in a Giant or at a gas station or wherever... why limit yourself?

    Aroma isn't on the list?

    Good. More for us.

lord, are you kidding me? Cookie, you totally hit the nail on the head.... all of those bars might as well be the same place...and (maybe)ok for an after-work happy hour, but beyond that...ugh. Makes me long for honkey-tonk Thursdays at Whitey's...ahh, the good ol' days!

What does it say that I've picked up or been picked up on (or bitten) at the majority of those places? Should I just get fitted for my white suit and captain's hat right now, or hold off a few years??

Will you and your friends go on and vote for Ultra Violet flower shop for the Best Florist?

I know The Florist would appreciate it.

Thanks for allowing me to make that plug...

Are you serious? Christ help us. Here's my take on a few of them:

    - Adams Mill Bar and Grill - NOVA kickball people, crowded by khaki-pants-wearing fuckwads from outta town

    - Clarendon Ballroom - Where the hell is Calrendon? I don't know and I've lived in DC since 1981.

    - Dream - Just what I like to look out at on the roof deck: a massive parking lot of school buses. How nice.

    - Local 16 - Good choice. Nice roof deck.

    - Tom Tom - Unless you're a date-rapist or Adams Morgan sparkle fatty, why would you go here?

Heaven and Hell should be included. After all...I did see two girls giving some random guy oral pleasure right beside the bar (no joke) last weekend

thoughts from a random blog interloper -
adams mill...been there once or twice, doesn't seem far removed from any other mediocre place i've been to adams morgan.
ballroom...love the rooftop there, but don't like the terrible bands that play there often. gonzo's nose? come on.
dream...was fun the one time i've been, but that was for a charity event, so it was probably a bit different than the typical scene there.
Local 16...good times for the most part.
    mcfadden's...awful.
mr. days...can deal with this place only to go and make fun of people if i'm already hammered and too lazy to leave the neighborhood.
front page...has anyone ever been on a night that isn't wednesday?
tom tom...good times if you want to be trampeled on the "dance floor" by throngs of drunk idiots. not too bad of a bad place to go early in the night though.
t & J's...is this place really any different than sequoia?
whitlows...haven't been in forever, but enjoyed their thursday mug nights.

i generally don't go to bars to pick people up, so maybe that list just isn't meant for me anyway.

I never go to Whitlow's for pick'ups. I do go there on Sunday nights and play Texas Hold'em Poker at Whitlow's, which has nothing to do with meat market activities, but I find it to be fun.
